A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku portraying the kabuki actor Sakakiyama Sangoro as Princess Odae, noted for its direct and expressive style.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sakakiyama Sangoro in the role of Princess Odae. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 prints within a ten-month span. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e genre of the era. Instead, he employed a style that emphasised the specific physical traits and psychological presence of the performers.
The composition features the actor in a standing pose, draped in an elaborate kimono decorated with a fan motif. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the Edo period printmaking tradition. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre tones and black ink to define the figure against a neutral background. The inclusion of the actor's name and the character role within the print serves to document the specific theatrical performance, providing a record of the kabuki culture that flourished in 18th-century Japan.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture often involved a degree of exaggeration in facial features, which captured the intensity of the kabuki stage. While his contemporaries focused on grace and beauty, Sharaku prioritised the raw expression of the actor. This print demonstrates his ability to balance decorative elements, such as the patterned fabric of the costume, with the stark, direct portrayal of the subject. The work remains a primary example of the artist's unique contribution to the ukiyo-e tradition, offering a glimpse into the theatrical world of the late 18th century. The print is a museum-grade reproduction, capturing the original textures and ink variations of the woodblock process.
