A 1861 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada featuring the actor Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I as the tattooed character Ude no Kisaburō.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, produced in 1861, depicts the kabuki actor Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I in the role of Ude no Kisaburō. The composition is part of the series A Modern Water Margin, which draws parallels between contemporary kabuki performers and the legendary heroes of the Chinese classic novel, The Water Margin. In this specific iteration, the actor is likened to Wu Song, a character known for his strength and martial prowess.
Kunisada, a prolific master of the Utagawa school, captures the actor in a moment of quiet intensity. The figure is shown with extensive, detailed tattoos covering his arms and chest, a visual element that signifies the character's rugged nature and association with the underworld. The deep blue of his garment provides a contrast to the pale skin and the dark, atmospheric background. Above the figure, a pine branch is rendered in silhouette, adding a sense of depth and framing the subject within the print. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the actor's name is characteristic of the format, providing necessary context for the contemporary audience of the Edo period.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium. The lines defining the actor's facial features and the complex patterns of the tattoos are executed with clarity. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the dark background and the saturated blue of the robe to create a focused visual experience. This work offers a view into the intersection of popular literature, theatrical performance, and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan, documenting the cultural fascination with both the heroic archetypes of the past and the celebrity status of kabuki actors.
