A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Buncho, capturing the actor Ichikawa Komazo II in a traditional kabuki role from 1772.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Buncho depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Komazo II in the role of Kudo Saemon Suketsune. Created in 1772, the work captures a moment from the play Haru wa Soga Akebono-zoshi, which was performed at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. Buncho was a master of the yakusha-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e focused on portraits of kabuki actors. His style is recognised for its refined line work and the ability to convey the specific personality of the performer rather than a generic mask.
The actor is shown in a dynamic pose, his hand resting on the hilt of a sword. His costume is rendered with attention to detail, featuring a pattern of horses on the lower garment and striped under-layers. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones and subtle red accents to guide the eye across the composition. The figure occupies the vertical space of the print with a sense of balance, typical of the hosoban format favoured for actor portraits during this period.
Buncho worked during the mid-Edo period, a time when the popularity of kabuki theatre reached new heights. Prints such as this functioned as souvenirs for theatre-goers, allowing them to keep a record of their favourite performers. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the lower right corner, confirming the authenticity of the piece. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic conventions of eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of human form and theatrical costume. The composition avoids unnecessary background elements, ensuring the viewer focuses entirely on the actor's posture and expression.
