A classic 1794 ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI in a dramatic, character-focused portrait.
Tōshūsai Sharaku produced this striking portrait of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI in 1794. The print depicts the actor in the role of the samurai Fuwa no Bansaku. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to actor portraits, often exaggerating facial features to capture the intensity of a performance rather than a flattering likeness. In this work, the actor is shown with a stern, focused expression, his posture conveying the authority of his character.
The composition is typical of the period, utilising a vertical format that focuses on the figure against a plain background. The artist employs bold, confident lines to define the actor's form and the elaborate patterns of his costume. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and subtle washes to create depth without distracting from the subject. The print captures a specific moment of theatrical tension, reflecting the artist's ability to distil the essence of a stage persona into a single, static image.
Sharaku's career was brief, spanning only ten months, yet his output remains a significant contribution to the ukiyo-e genre. His work often deviates from the idealised beauty found in the prints of his contemporaries, opting instead for a raw, psychological realism. This portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VI is a clear example of his distinctive style, which prioritises characterisation and dramatic presence. The print serves as a record of the kabuki theatre culture in late eighteenth-century Edo, documenting both the fashion of the time and the performative styles of its most celebrated actors.
