A traditional Japanese diptych featuring deer beneath pine and peach trees, symbols of longevity and endurance, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This diptych by Toda Tadanaka presents a traditional East Asian iconography centred on the theme of longevity. The deer, often associated with the immortals in Daoist lore, appears here in a serene setting beneath the branches of pine and peach trees. Both the pine and the peach are potent symbols in Japanese art: the pine represents endurance due to its evergreen nature, while the peach is frequently linked to the myth of the fruit of immortality.
Tadanaka employs a delicate brush technique to render the texture of the deer fur and the rugged bark of the trees. The composition balances the animals against the verticality of the trunks, creating a sense of quietude. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greens, and the subtle pink of the ripening peaches to guide the eye across the silk surface. The artist uses negative space effectively, allowing the figures to occupy the frame without clutter, which is characteristic of the period's aesthetic preferences.
As a practitioner of the Edo period, Tadanaka demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in ink and colour wash.
