A contemplative work of Japanese calligraphy by the Zen monk Ryōkan Taigu, featuring a poem written in ink on paper.
Ryōkan Taigu, a Sōtō Zen monk and hermit, remains one of the most respected figures in Japanese calligraphy. Living a life of voluntary poverty, he resided in a small hut at the base of Mount Kugami. His artistic output reflects his spiritual practice: unpretentious, direct, and deeply personal. Unlike the rigid, formal styles favoured by the professional calligraphers of his era, Ryōkan adopted a fluid, idiosyncratic approach that prioritised emotional honesty over technical perfection.
This work, a Chinese poem lamenting the death of a friend, displays the characteristic ease of his brushwork. The characters are spaced with a rhythmic, almost conversational cadence. The ink density varies naturally, showing the pressure of the brush as it moves across the paper. Ryōkan often wrote in a style influenced by ancient Chinese masters, yet he infused his own distinct personality into every stroke. The composition is balanced, yet it avoids the symmetry often found in more academic calligraphy.
In this piece, the text serves as a meditation on loss and the impermanence of human connection. The brushwork is neither overly aggressive nor overly delicate; it possesses a grounded quality that mirrors the monk's own lifestyle. By choosing to write in Chinese, a common practice for educated Japanese monks of the time, Ryōkan engages with a long tradition of literary mourning. The work is a fine example of how calligraphy functions as a visual record of the artist's state of mind. It invites the viewer to slow down and observe the movement of the ink, which captures a moment of quiet reflection from the early 19th century.
