A stark, monochromatic abstract composition by Franz Kline, featuring a suspended black square form above a horizontal base.
Franz Kline is known for his large-scale, monochromatic works that occupy the space between gesture and structure. Suspended, painted in 1958, displays the artist's characteristic use of house-painter brushes and industrial black pigment against a stark white ground. The composition features a singular, heavy-set square form hovering above a horizontal base line. This arrangement creates a tension between the floating mass and the ground, a recurring theme in Kline's mid-career output.
Unlike the spontaneous, all-over compositions of some of his contemporaries, Kline's process involved careful preparation. He often worked from small sketches, sometimes created on telephone book pages, which he would then project and enlarge onto canvas. This method allowed him to maintain a sense of scale and architectural weight even within an abstract framework. The drips and splatters visible at the lower edges of the forms are not accidental, but rather evidence of the physical application of paint. They provide a record of the artist's movement and the viscosity of the medium.
In this work, the black paint does not merely sit on the surface. It interacts with the white background, which Kline treated as an active participant in the composition rather than empty space. The balance of positive and negative areas creates a sense of equilibrium. The work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the relationship between line, mass, and the physical act of painting. By stripping away colour and narrative, Kline directs attention to the raw energy of the brushstroke and the structural integrity of the composition. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to imbue simple geometric forms with a sense of gravity and presence.
