A detailed 1862 portrait by Frederick Sandys, capturing the texture of lace, silk, and fur with the precision characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite style.
This portrait of Susanna Rose, painted by Frederick Sandys in 1862, demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle. Sandys, a contemporary of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, maintained a close connection to the movement through his meticulous approach to detail and his interest in historical subjects. The sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed away from the viewer, which adds a sense of psychological distance to the composition.
The painting is notable for its varied textures. Sandys renders the soft lace of the sitter's cap, the sheen of the dark silk garment, and the tactile quality of the fur wrap with exacting care. Behind the subject, a dark green patterned textile provides a flat, decorative backdrop that contrasts with the small, framed view of a landscape visible through an open window on the right. This inclusion of a distant, light-filled exterior serves to balance the darker, more enclosed interior space occupied by the sitter.
Sandys includes specific heraldic and calligraphic elements in the upper left corner, which provide biographical context for the subject. The inclusion of the date and the artist's monogram in the lower left corner confirms the work's provenance within his mature period. The composition relies on a controlled palette, where the deep tones of the clothing and background allow the pale skin and the bright blue ribbon of the cap to draw the eye. This work remains a clear example of the Victorian interest in portraiture that combined realistic observation with a deliberate, almost archaic, sense of arrangement.
