A delicate ink on silk painting from the 14th century, depicting a squirrel resting on a pine branch with traditional brushwork.
This ink on silk work by the Yuan Dynasty artist Song Tian captures a moment of quiet observation. The composition centres on a squirrel perched upon a curved pine branch, rendered with a focus on texture and form. The artist employs varying ink washes to suggest the softness of the squirrel's fur, contrasting this with the firmer, more deliberate strokes used to define the bark of the pine and the sharp needles extending from the bough.
The use of negative space is characteristic of the period, allowing the subject to exist within an uncluttered environment. The pine branch stretches across the upper portion of the frame, providing a natural anchor for the squirrel. A single pine cone is visible, adding a subtle detail that grounds the scene in a specific botanical context. The ink application remains restrained, favouring tonal gradation over colour to convey the atmosphere of the natural world.
Song Tian, active during the 14th century, followed the traditions of Chinese bird-and-flower painting. This genre often sought to capture the essence of a subject through economy of line and brushwork. The squirrel is depicted with a sense of alertness, its body positioned to balance the weight of the branch. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the interplay between the ink and the silk support to create depth. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Yuan era, where the observation of nature was a primary concern for the literati and professional painters alike. The print preserves the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink, ensuring that the delicate brushwork remains visible in this reproduction.
