Spring Cleaning - Yokoi Kinkoku

Yokoi Kinkoku, a monk of the Jodo sect and a practitioner of the Bunjinga tradition, produced this hanging scroll using ink and light washes of colour on silk. The composition follows the vertical format typical of traditional East Asian scroll painting, guiding the eye from the foreground activity upward toward the craggy, mountainous terrain.

In the lower section, figures are depicted engaged in domestic tasks, providing a human element to the scene. The architecture consists of thatched-roof structures, rendered with a light touch that allows the texture of the silk to remain visible. The trees, executed with dry brushwork, show the skeletal forms of late winter or early spring, contrasting with the more solid, rounded forms of the peaks above. Kinkoku employs a personal style that often deviates from the rigid academic standards of his contemporaries, favouring a sense of spontaneity and individual expression.

The mountains are constructed through layered washes and textured strokes, creating a sense of mass without relying on heavy outlines. The scroll is mounted with decorative borders, typical of the period, which frame the central image without distracting from the brushwork.
