A traditional Japanese Bunjinga hanging scroll by Aoki Shukuya, depicting a mountainous retreat through delicate ink washes and light colour.
Aoki Shukuya, a student of the influential Ike no Taiga, produced this hanging scroll in the late eighteenth century. The work adheres to the Bunjinga tradition, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting. It depicts a mountainous terrain where craggy peaks emerge from layers of mist, creating a sense of distance and atmospheric depth. The composition follows a vertical axis, guiding the eye from the foreground dwellings and trees upward toward the distant, cloud-shrouded summits.
Technically, the artist employs a restrained palette of ink washes combined with subtle applications of light colour. The brushwork varies between defined outlines for the rock formations and softer, blurred washes for the foliage and clouds. This technique allows for a balance between structural clarity and the ethereal quality of the mountain air.
