A 1993 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring organic forms and gestural marks in a luminous yellow field.
Solar Imp is a lithograph produced by Helen Frankenthaler in 1993. This work demonstrates her mastery of the printmaking medium, a field she explored extensively alongside her painting practice. Frankenthaler is associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, known for her soak-stain technique where thinned paint is applied to unprimed canvas. In this print, she translates that fluid approach into the layered processes of lithography.
The composition features a central arrangement of organic shapes and gestural marks against a luminous, yellow-toned field. The interplay between the solid black forms and the lighter, translucent washes of colour creates a sense of spatial depth despite the two-dimensional surface. Frankenthaler often allowed the white of the paper to act as an active element, providing breath and structure to the more saturated areas. The work avoids rigid geometry, favouring instead the spontaneous, calligraphic quality of her brushwork.
Frankenthaler collaborated with master printers to achieve the specific textures seen here. The print captures the immediacy of her studio process, where the physical act of applying ink to stone or plate mirrors the energy of her larger canvases. The title, Solar Imp, suggests a playful yet elemental energy, consistent with her tendency to evoke natural phenomena through non-representational forms. This piece offers a clear view into her later career, where she continued to refine her command of colour and negative space. It remains a representative example of her ability to balance controlled composition with the appearance of chance.
