Beschreibung
A 1985 abstract work by Cy Twombly, inspired by the myth of Hero and Leander, featuring gestural marks and atmospheric washes of red and white.
Cy Twombly produced Hero and Leander (To Christopher Marlowe) in 1985, a period during which he resided in Rome. The work draws thematic inspiration from the classical myth of the two lovers, as well as the poem by Christopher Marlowe. Twombly engages with the narrative through a gestural language that avoids literal representation, opting instead for an atmospheric exploration of emotion and movement.
The canvas is dominated by a pale, ethereal ground that suggests the vastness of the Hellespont. Across this surface, Twombly applies layers of oil paint, oil stick, and graphite. The left side of the composition features a dense accumulation of crimson and deep red pigments, which appear to cascade downwards in drips and streaks. These marks evoke the tragic nature of the myth, suggesting blood or the turbulent waters of the sea. The application of paint varies from thick, tactile impasto to thin, translucent washes, creating a sense of depth and temporal progression.
Twombly uses a calligraphic approach to mark-making, where the physical act of drawing becomes the subject itself. The graphite lines are often obscured or integrated into the paint, functioning as traces of thought rather than defined shapes. The composition lacks a traditional focal point, encouraging the viewer to scan the surface and observe the interplay between the chaotic, saturated areas and the quiet, expansive voids. This work reflects Twombly's interest in the intersection of classical literature and modern abstraction, where the historical source material provides a framework for purely visual expression. The result is a work that balances raw energy with a sense of historical distance, characteristic of his mature style developed during his decades in Italy.
