Slowly Toward the North, painted in 1942, represents the mature phase of Yves Tanguy's career following his relocation to the United States. The composition features a vast, desolate horizon that characterises much of his work from this period. Tanguy populates this space with biomorphic forms, geometric structures, and ambiguous objects that defy clear classification. These elements appear to inhabit a vacuum, suspended in a state of stillness against a dark, atmospheric background.
The painting demonstrates Tanguy's precise technique. He renders these strange, solid objects with a smooth finish, creating a contrast between their physical presence and the ethereal, almost liquid quality of the surrounding space. The light source is difficult to pinpoint, which adds to the sense of displacement. The geometric wire-frame structure on the right side of the canvas provides a rigid counterpoint to the softer, organic shapes clustered in the foreground. This juxtaposition of the mechanical and the biological is a recurring theme in his output.
Tanguy was largely self-taught, having been inspired to paint after seeing a work by Giorgio de Chirico in a gallery window. His approach to the canvas was intuitive, as he often began without a preconceived plan, allowing the forms to emerge through the process of painting. This method resulted in compositions that feel like dreamscapes or visions of an alien geology. Artist Biography
Yves Tanguy
He was born in Paris in 1900. He briefly joined the merchant navy in 1918 before being drafted into the army, where he met the poet Jacques Prevert, who later introduced him to Andre Breton's Surrealist circle. He joined the Surrealists in 1925 and had his first solo show just two years later, having taught himself everything.
His paintings consistently depict flat, featureless landscapes resembling sea floors or alien terrain, populated by biomorphic forms that look like melted rocks or bones. He never explained them. The palette is muted, the horizons infinite, the atmosphere airless. The same vocabulary of forms appears across decades of work with only gradual variation.
He married the American Surrealist painter Kay Sage in Reno, Nevada, in 1940. They settled in Woodbury, Connecticut, converting an old farmhouse into a studio. He died there in 1955, aged fifty-five.
