This series documents the journey along the coastal route connecting Edo to Kyoto. Shinagawa was the first station after leaving Edo, serving as a busy post town for travellers beginning their long trek.

Hiroshige depicts the early morning atmosphere with a focus on the transition between the dark blue water and the pale sky. The composition is divided between the bustling activity of the post town on the right and the calm bay on the left. Several sailing vessels are visible on the water, their white sails catching the first light of day. On the shore, figures move through the street, suggesting the start of a day for merchants and travellers alike.
