A woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicting the Urami-ga-taki waterfall in Nikko, featuring travellers navigating the rugged mountain paths.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts the Urami-ga-taki, or Backward-viewing Falls, situated within the mountainous terrain of Nikko. As part of the series Famous Scenic Spots in the Mountains of Nikko, the work captures the sheer scale of the waterfall as it cascades down a rugged rock face. Eisen employs a vertical composition to emphasise the height of the drop, while small figures of travellers are positioned along the narrow paths to provide a sense of proportion to the natural surroundings.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The water is rendered with rhythmic, vertical lines that suggest movement and force, contrasting with the solid, textured forms of the surrounding cliffs. The colour palette relies on earthy tones for the rock formations, balanced by the cool blues of the water and the muted greens of the foliage. The inclusion of travellers, some carrying packs and wearing straw hats, reflects the popularity of travel and pilgrimage during the Edo period, where scenic sites became subjects of artistic documentation.
Eisen, a prolific artist known for his work in various genres, brings a sense of drama to this scene. The composition draws the eye from the top of the falls down to the turbulent basin at the bottom, where the water gathers and flows forward. The print serves as a record of the topography of Nikko, a location of both religious and aesthetic interest in nineteenth-century Japan. The careful balance between the human presence and the overwhelming power of the waterfall is a characteristic feature of this series, offering a view into the way artists of the period interpreted the natural world.
