This woodblock print originates from the 1785 publication 'Suiyo shōroku: Santōan issekiwa', authored and illustrated by Kitao Masanobu. Masanobu, also known as Santō Kyōden, was a prominent figure in the Edo period, active as both a writer of popular fiction and a designer of ukiyo-e prints. This specific page demonstrates the integration of text and image typical of the period's literary culture.
The composition features a handprint on the right page, rendered with a direct, gestural quality. The ink application suggests a physical impression, creating a stark contrast against the aged paper. To the left, the text is written in a fluid, cursive script. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, maintaining a balance between the density of the calligraphy and the negative space surrounding the handprint.
Kitao Masanobu was a student of Kitao Shigemasa and became a master in his own right. His work often reflects the wit and urban culture of Edo.
