A detailed 1526 engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Apostle Philip, rendered with precise line work and solemn composition.
This engraving by Albrecht Dürer, dated 1526, depicts the Apostle Philip. The figure stands in profile, facing right, holding a tall cross in his left hand and a book in his right. He is dressed in heavy, voluminous robes that fall in deep folds, demonstrating Dürer's mastery of line and shadow. The artist uses a variety of hatching techniques to define the texture of the fabric and the weight of the figure against a rocky, sparse background.
In the lower left corner, Dürer includes his characteristic monogram on a small tablet, alongside the date 1526. This work belongs to a series of engravings of the Apostles that Dürer produced towards the end of his career. The composition is restrained, focusing on the solemnity of the subject. The figure's posture is grounded, with his bare feet resting on the earth, while the cross serves as a vertical anchor for the entire image. The treatment of the hair and beard shows the precision typical of Dürer's late graphic work, where every stroke serves to model form and create volume.
This print reflects the artist's interest in human proportion and the study of the human figure, which occupied much of his later life. The clarity of the lines and the balance between the figure and the surrounding space are characteristic of his mature style. By this period, Dürer had moved away from the crowded, busy compositions of his earlier years, preferring a more monumental and simplified approach to his subjects. The engraving remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved in German printmaking during the early sixteenth century, showing the potential of the medium to convey both physical presence and spiritual gravity.
