A masterpiece of the Scottish Celtic Revival, this 1913 painting depicts the legend of Saint Bride being transported by angels to Bethlehem.
John Duncan, a central figure in the Scottish Celtic Revival, completed Saint Bride in 1913. The work depicts the legend of Saint Bride, or Brigid of Kildare, who is carried by angels from Iona to Bethlehem to attend the birth of Christ. The composition is heavily influenced by the aesthetic of early Italian Renaissance painters, particularly in the treatment of the figures and the flattened, decorative space.
The two angels, with their expansive, multi-coloured wings, dominate the upper portion of the frame. Their garments are decorated with small, narrative panels that resemble illuminated manuscripts or ecclesiastical embroidery. These details provide a secondary layer of storytelling, grounding the ethereal subject matter in the traditions of medieval craft. Below them, the dark, churning sea is punctuated by the head of a seal, a nod to the coastal folklore of the Hebrides.
Duncan employs a precise, linear style that emphasises the contours of the figures and the rhythmic patterns of the waves and clouds. The palette is carefully balanced, using the deep blues and greens of the ocean to contrast with the warm, golden halos and the soft pinks of the sky. The border, featuring geometric patterns, frames the scene like a devotional object. This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of Christian hagiography and Gaelic mythology, a common theme in his output. The painting is held in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland, where it remains a representative example of the artist's technical precision and his dedication to the cultural heritage of his homeland.
