A detailed 1860 woodblock print by Koizumi Daizan, combining topographical mapping with atmospheric views of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print originates from the series Fugaku shashin, or Realistic Pictures of Mount Fuji, produced by the Japanese artist Koizumi Daizan in 1860. The composition is divided into distinct sections, demonstrating a blend of artistic representation and cartographic precision. The upper portion features a dual approach: a rendered view of the mountain alongside a schematic map that labels specific routes, villages, and geographical markers. This combination reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in documenting the physical reality of the Japanese terrain.
The lower section presents a wider, atmospheric view of the mountain rising above a river valley. The artist employs a muted palette, using soft blue washes for the sky and water, which contrast with the darker, ink-heavy tones of the mountain peak and the surrounding foliage. The inclusion of calligraphic text adds a literary dimension to the visual documentation, a common practice in Japanese print culture of the period. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the woodblock medium, which requires careful carving to achieve such clarity in the topographical details.
Koizumi Daizan was active during the late Edo period, a time when the depiction of Mount Fuji became a standard subject for artists seeking to capture the national identity through its most iconic natural feature. Unlike the more stylised or dramatic interpretations found in other works of the era, this print prioritises a factual, observational quality. It functions as both a visual record and a guide, offering the viewer a sense of the scale and orientation of the region. The work provides a clear example of how traditional printmaking techniques were adapted to serve the growing demand for accurate geographical information in Japan.
