A geometric abstraction by Max Bill, featuring a central purple square within a diamond frame of orange and yellow.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work in 1973. The composition adheres to the principles of mathematical precision and objective clarity that defined his career. Bill was a student at the Bauhaus, and he maintained a rigorous approach to form throughout his life. He believed that art should be constructed from its own inherent laws, rather than imitating nature or expressing subjective emotion.
The painting features a diamond-oriented square, which is subdivided into smaller geometric segments. A central square of soft purple sits within a larger diamond frame, flanked by triangles of orange and yellow. The arrangement relies on the interaction of these primary and secondary colours to create a sense of balance. There is no attempt to create an illusion of depth or perspective. The surface remains flat, directing the viewer to focus on the relationships between the shapes and the specific hues chosen.
Bill often explored the concept of the 'mathematical beauty' of art. By using geometry as a foundation, he removed the influence of the artist's hand, allowing the viewer to engage directly with the visual logic of the piece. This work is an example of his later period, where he refined his palette to explore how colour fields interact within a strictly defined structure. The absence of representational elements ensures that the focus remains on the spatial organisation and the chromatic tension between the purple centre and the surrounding warm tones. It is a study in order, proportion, and the reduction of visual information to its most essential components.
