Beschreibung
A charming 1908 study by Henri Rousseau, depicting a rabbit against a red brick wall with a direct, graphic style.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve or Primitivist movement, produced this study of a rabbit in 1908. The work displays the characteristic clarity and flattened perspective found throughout his oeuvre. Rousseau, who worked as a toll collector for much of his life, approached his subjects with a directness that bypassed the academic conventions of his contemporaries.
The composition features a rabbit positioned before a stark, red brick wall. The animal is rendered with a focus on its physical form, accompanied by a single large leaf and two carrots. The tree branch extending from the right side provides a sense of enclosure, while the lack of traditional atmospheric perspective creates a stage-like quality. The colours are applied in distinct, solid blocks, reflecting the artist's preference for defined shapes over soft transitions.
This piece demonstrates Rousseau's ability to imbue everyday subjects with a sense of stillness. His work often features a meticulous attention to detail, seen here in the texture of the rabbit's fur and the individual bricks of the wall. By stripping away unnecessary background elements, the artist directs the viewer's attention entirely to the creature. This approach aligns with his broader practice of creating scenes that feel both familiar and slightly detached from reality. The work remains a clear example of his unique visual language, which prioritised personal observation and a simplified, graphic aesthetic over the complex techniques favoured by the Parisian art establishment of the early twentieth century.

Rabbit - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
