A delicate woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō depicting a peaceful domestic scene of study and family life in a traditional Japanese interior.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book 'Ehon sakae gusa', or 'Prosperity of the Family', produced by the Ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunchō. The work depicts a domestic scene within a traditional Japanese interior, showing women and children engaged in study and quiet activity. The composition is divided across two pages, a common format for books of this period, which allows for a narrative flow between the two spaces.
Shunchō, a member of the Katsukawa school, is known for his depictions of figures in elegant, relaxed poses. Here, the artist employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the folds of the kimono. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted reds, and the warm yellow of the tatami mats to create a sense of calm. The architectural elements, such as the sliding shoji screens and the low writing desks, provide a structured framework for the figures. A small cat sits in the lower right, adding a touch of informal life to the studious atmosphere.
This print offers a view into the daily life of the period, focusing on education and family harmony. The figures are rendered with a focus on grace rather than dramatic action. The use of space is balanced, with the furniture and architectural lines guiding the eye across the scene. As a piece of book illustration, it demonstrates the technical skill involved in carving and printing multiple blocks to achieve subtle tonal variations. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, where the domestic sphere was often treated with the same attention to detail as the more public scenes of the pleasure quarters.
