A striking example of Zen calligraphy by the 18th-century monk Jiun Onkō, capturing the concept of 'Profound Sincerity' through expressive, fluid brushwork.
Jiun Onkō, a prominent Buddhist monk of the Edo period, produced this work of calligraphy. The characters represent the concept of 'Profound Sincerity' or 'Makoto'. In the tradition of Zen calligraphy, the physical act of writing is an extension of the practitioner's meditative state. The ink application displays a direct, unhesitating quality, characteristic of the artist's approach to spiritual expression.
The composition is vertical, typical of a hanging scroll format. The brushwork varies in pressure and speed, creating a rhythm that guides the viewer's eye down the length of the paper. The ink density shifts from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, dry-brush strokes where the bristles have left visible marks on the paper surface. This technique, known as 'flying white', adds a sense of movement and spontaneity to the static characters.
Jiun Onkō was known for his efforts to revive the study of Sanskrit and his dedication to the Vinaya, or monastic discipline. His calligraphy often reflects this rigour, combined with the freedom found in Zen practice. The red seals placed near the characters provide a visual counterpoint to the monochrome ink, marking the work with the artist's identity. This piece is a clear example of the intersection between religious philosophy and artistic discipline in 18th-century Japan. The focus remains on the immediacy of the brush stroke, capturing a singular moment of concentration. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the texture of the original ink and the subtle variations in the paper tone.
