A powerful example of Zen calligraphy by the master Bankei Yōtaku, featuring a contemplative verse by Fu Daishi rendered in fluid, expressive ink strokes.
This work presents a calligraphic rendering of a gatha, or verse, attributed to the Chinese Chan master Fu Daishi. The artist, Bankei Yōtaku, was a prominent Rinzai Zen master known for his direct teaching style and his focus on the Unborn. His calligraphy reflects the spontaneity and lack of artifice central to his philosophy. The characters are executed with a bold, fluid brush, demonstrating a mastery of ink control and rhythmic movement across the paper surface.
Bankei often utilised calligraphy as a means to transmit the essence of Zen practice. The brushwork here is uninhibited, showing a clear departure from the rigid formality of earlier calligraphic traditions. Each stroke carries the weight of the artist's presence, capturing a moment of meditative clarity. The ink varies in density, creating a sense of depth and texture that contrasts with the plain, neutral background. This piece is not merely a transcription of text, but a visual expression of the meditative state itself.
In the context of Japanese Zen art, such scrolls were intended for display in a tokonoma, or alcove, to provide a focus for contemplation. The composition is vertical, typical of hanging scrolls, with the characters arranged in a balanced yet dynamic column. The lack of decorative elements ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the form and energy of the ink. By choosing to transcribe the words of Fu Daishi, Bankei aligns himself with the lineage of masters who emphasised the immediate realisation of truth. This print captures the raw, expressive quality of the original ink work, preserving the nuances of the brush strokes and the subtle variations in ink tone. It offers a window into the aesthetic and spiritual practices of the Edo period, where the written word functioned as a bridge between the mundane and the transcendent.
