This portrait depicts Suraj Singh Rathor, the Raja of Marwar, standing in profile against a soft, pale green background. The subject is dressed in traditional Mughal court attire, including a sheer jama over vibrant orange trousers and a patterned sash. His posture is relaxed, with hands folded at the waist, a common convention in seventeenth-century court portraiture. The artist, Bishandas, was a master of the Mughal school, known for his ability to capture individual likenesses with precision and restraint.
Bishandas was highly regarded by the Emperor Jahangir, who sent him to Persia to document the Safavid court. This work, a page from the Prince Khurram album, demonstrates the technical skill associated with the imperial workshops. The application of opaque watercolour and gold leaf creates a surface that is both matte and luminous. Small, stylised floral motifs surround the figure, adding a decorative element that balances the composition without distracting from the subject. The fine line work in the facial features and the delicate rendering of the sheer fabric reveal the artist's attention to texture and form.
