A seventeenth-century Mughal miniature depicting a couple in European dress, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This work by the artist known as the Bodleian Painter, Ali Riza, captures a curious intersection of cultures during the early seventeenth century. The miniature depicts a man and a woman dressed in European attire, a subject that reflects the fascination of the Mughal court with foreign visitors, traders, and diplomats. The male figure wears a doublet, breeches, and a hat, while the female figure is adorned in a long gown with a ruff collar, holding a small vessel and a glass.
The artist employs a delicate line quality, characteristic of the Mughal school, to define the figures against a neutral, pale background. The composition is flat, typical of the period, with the couple standing in a formal, posed manner. Small floral sprigs at their feet and two birds in the upper sky provide a sense of place, though the setting remains largely symbolic rather than realistic. The palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greens, and subtle applications of gold to highlight details of the clothing and jewellery.
Ali Riza, often identified as the Bodleian Painter due to the presence of his works in the Bodleian Library collections, was active during the reign of Jahangir. His work demonstrates an awareness of European prints and paintings that reached the Mughal court through Jesuit missions and trade. By adopting these foreign motifs, the artist creates a synthesis of styles, blending the precision of Indian miniature traditions with the exoticism of Western fashion. The result is a document of the cultural curiosity that defined the Mughal era, where global influences were observed, adapted, and integrated into the local artistic vocabulary. This print offers a view into the historical exchange between the East and the West, preserved through the meticulous hand of a master miniaturist.
