An early eighteenth-century woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting kabuki actors in the role of flower sellers.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts the kabuki actors Ichimura Takenojō and Sanjō Kantarō in the guise of flower sellers. The work is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where the artist applied black lacquer or glue to specific areas of the design to create a glossy, deep contrast against the paper. The composition centres on the figures carrying a yoke across their shoulders, from which two large baskets of seasonal flowers are suspended.
The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the folds of the kimono, while the patterns on the garments are rendered with bold, graphic precision. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted earth tones and soft washes that allow the structural lines of the woodblock to remain the primary focus. The figures are presented in a stylised manner, typical of the early eighteenth-century Edo period, where the focus was on the theatricality of the actors and the elegance of their costumes.
Okumura Toshinobu was active during the formative years of the Ukiyo-e tradition. His work often captured the popular culture of the time, specifically the world of the theatre and the fashionable figures of the pleasure districts. The baskets of flowers serve as a decorative frame for the actors, balancing the composition and providing a sense of seasonal rhythm. The print demonstrates the technical skill required in early Japanese printmaking, where the alignment of blocks and the application of hand-applied pigments were essential to the final aesthetic. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual language of the period, where the boundaries between daily life and theatrical performance were frequently blurred.
