A formal eighteenth-century portrait of Diederik van Durven, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, painted by Hendrik van den Bosch.
This portrait depicts Diederik van Durven, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies between 1729 and 1730. Painted by Hendrik van den Bosch, the work adheres to the formal conventions of eighteenth-century colonial portraiture. Van Durven is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing a dark coat and a long, powdered periwig, which was the standard attire for high-ranking officials of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) during this period.
The composition includes traditional symbols of authority. Van Durven holds a baton in his right hand, a common attribute for military and administrative leaders, while his left hand rests near a helmet. The background features architectural elements, including a column and draped fabric, which provide a sense of gravitas. To the left, a small statue is visible, adding a classical touch to the setting.
A prominent feature of the painting is the cartouche at the base, which displays the coat of arms of the Van Durven family. The inscription identifies the sitter by his full name and his title as Governor-General. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep browns, blacks, and muted ochres to focus the viewer's attention on the sitter's face and his official regalia. The lighting is focused, creating a soft contrast between the subject and the shadowed background. This painting is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which houses a series of portraits of former Governors-General, documenting the administrative history of the Dutch presence in the East Indies.
