A formal eighteenth-century portrait of Abraham Patras, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, painted by Theodorus Justinus Rheen.
This portrait depicts Abraham Patras, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1735 until his death in 1737. Painted by Theodorus Justinus Rheen, the work adheres to the formal conventions of eighteenth-century colonial portraiture. Patras is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the formal attire expected of a high-ranking official of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His costume includes a long, dark red coat, a waistcoat, and a full-bottomed wig, which signify his status and authority within the administrative hierarchy of the period.
The composition incorporates symbolic elements typical of official portraiture. Patras holds a baton of command in his right hand, a traditional attribute denoting military or civil leadership. His left hand rests upon a table, near which heraldic shields are visible, further reinforcing his position and lineage.
