A striking calligraphic triptych by the Obaku Zen master Mu'an Xingtao, featuring expressive ink brushwork on paper.
This triptych features the calligraphic work of Mu'an Xingtao, a prominent figure of the Obaku Zen school. Born in China, Mu'an travelled to Japan in 1651 to join his teacher, Ingen Ryūki, at the Manpuku-ji temple in Uji. His work reflects the specific aesthetic of the Obaku tradition, which merged Chinese Ming-dynasty styles with Japanese Zen practice.
The calligraphy is executed in a bold, expressive hand. The characters demonstrate a high degree of control, with variations in ink density and brush pressure that suggest a rapid, intuitive movement. The composition is vertical, designed to be displayed as a set of hanging scrolls. Each stroke carries the weight of the artist's training, prioritising the energy of the gesture over rigid formal perfection. The ink remains dark and saturated against the aged paper, providing a visual contrast that draws the eye to the structure of the characters.
Mu'an was known for his role in transmitting the Obaku lineage, and his calligraphy was often produced as a form of spiritual exercise. The characters here are not merely linguistic symbols; they function as a visual record of the artist's meditative state. The spacing between the characters is deliberate, allowing the negative space of the paper to balance the density of the ink. This work provides an example of the calligraphic traditions that defined the intellectual and religious life of the seventeenth-century Zen community in Japan. It is a piece that requires careful observation to appreciate the rhythm and flow of the brushwork, which remains consistent across all three panels.
