A striking example of Japanese calligraphy, this ink on paper scroll features expressive brushwork and a balanced composition.
This work by Kasumi Bunsho is an example of traditional Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo. The composition features bold, expressive ink characters arranged vertically on a scroll format. The artist employs varying pressure and speed to create a rhythm within the brushwork, moving from dense, saturated black strokes at the top to lighter, drier marks towards the base. This technique, known as 'fude-tsukai', allows the artist to convey energy and movement through the physical act of writing.
The characters occupy the central space of the paper, leaving significant negative space around the edges. This balance between the inked forms and the empty paper is a core principle in Japanese aesthetics, encouraging the viewer to appreciate the void as much as the mark. The ink itself displays subtle tonal variations, suggesting the use of high-quality sumi ink ground on a stone. The texture of the paper is visible, providing a tactile quality to the work that complements the fluid nature of the brushstrokes.
Kasumi Bunsho demonstrates a mastery of control and spontaneity. The characters appear to flow into one another, creating a sense of continuity that guides the eye from the top of the scroll to the bottom. The red seal, or 'hanko', located in the upper right corner, provides a small but necessary visual anchor, balancing the weight of the ink characters. This piece is suited for minimalist interiors where the focus remains on the interplay of form, space, and the raw materiality of ink on paper. It represents a disciplined approach to the art of writing, where every stroke is intentional and final.
