A fine example of Ming Dynasty cursive calligraphy by Chen Chun, presented on a traditional fan-shaped gold-flecked paper.
This fan-shaped work features the cursive script of Chen Chun, a prominent figure of the Wu School during the Ming Dynasty. The calligraphy is executed in black ink upon a ground of gold-flecked paper, a format popular among the literati for its portability and aesthetic refinement. The text records a poem composed for the Double Ninth Festival, a traditional occasion marked by the appreciation of chrysanthemums and the consumption of chrysanthemum wine.
Chen Chun was a student of Wen Zhengming, and his calligraphic style reflects the fluid, expressive nature of the period. The characters demonstrate a balance between speed and control, with varying stroke weights that convey the rhythm of the poet's hand. The cursive script, or caoshu, allows for a degree of abstraction where individual characters merge into a continuous flow of energy. This style prioritises the emotional resonance of the brushwork over strict legibility, inviting the viewer to appreciate the movement of the ink across the surface.
The fan format imposes a specific compositional challenge, requiring the artist to arrange the columns of text to accommodate the radiating shape of the paper. Chen Chun manages this by adjusting the height and spacing of the characters, ensuring the visual weight remains balanced across the arc. The inclusion of a red seal provides a point of contrast against the muted gold background, grounding the composition. This piece represents the intersection of literary tradition and visual art, where the act of writing serves as a medium for personal expression and cultural observance.
