A fine example of Ming Dynasty cursive calligraphy by Wen Peng, executed on a gold-flecked folding fan.
This work by Wen Peng (1498-1573) presents a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy executed on a folding fan. Wen Peng, the eldest son of the celebrated artist Wen Zhengming, was a prominent figure in the cultural circles of Suzhou. He gained recognition for his mastery of various scripts, particularly the cursive style displayed here, which balances technical precision with a fluid, expressive rhythm.
The characters are arranged across the radial surface of the fan, a format that requires the artist to adjust the spacing and scale of the strokes to accommodate the tapering geometry of the paper. The ink sits upon a gold-flecked ground, a material choice that adds a subtle luminosity to the composition. The brushwork exhibits a controlled energy, with varying pressure creating a contrast between thick, weighted strokes and thinner, trailing lines. This variation provides a sense of movement across the page, guiding the eye from right to left in accordance with traditional reading practices.
As a scholar-official, Wen Peng operated within a tradition where calligraphy was considered a primary expression of the artist's character and intellectual cultivation. The text reflects the literary interests of the period, often incorporating poetry or prose that resonated with the literati class. The presence of red seals at the lower left indicates the provenance and ownership history, common in the appreciation of Chinese ink works. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the depth of the ink, offering a clear view of the calligraphic technique. It serves as a study in the application of traditional brush methods to the specific constraints of the fan format, demonstrating the technical skill required to maintain balance and harmony within a non-rectangular space.
