A refined woodblock print from the 'Ehon tokiwagusa' by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting figures in traditional Japanese attire within a domestic interior.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Ehon tokiwagusa' (Picture Book of the Evergreens), a publication by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Active during the early eighteenth century, Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator who produced numerous books featuring scenes of daily life, classical literature, and courtly customs. His work is known for its focus on the lives of women, often depicting them in domestic or refined settings with a focus on the patterns of their kimono and the architecture of their surroundings.
The composition shows two figures in a traditional interior, likely referencing a scene from classical literature such as 'The Tale of Genji'. The left panel depicts a woman seen from behind, her long hair cascading down her back, while the right panel shows a seated woman facing forward. Both figures wear elaborate, multi-layered robes decorated with geometric and floral motifs. The architectural elements, including the sliding doors and the raised floor, provide a sense of spatial depth typical of the period's book illustrations.
Sukenobu used a clean, calligraphic line to define the forms, allowing the patterns on the textiles to take visual precedence. The print is monochrome, with minimal hand-applied colour accents, which was a common practice for books of this era before the widespread adoption of full-colour nishiki-e prints. The scene captures a quiet, contemplative moment, reflecting the aesthetic values of the Edo period. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic conventions of eighteenth-century Japanese book production, where the balance between text and image was carefully managed to guide the reader through the narrative. The attention to detail in the clothing and the interior setting demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering the material culture of his time.
