This woodblock print originates from the 'Ukiyo efu' (Picture Album of the Floating World), a collection by the Japanese artist Keisai Eisen. Eisen was a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, active during the late Edo period. His work often focused on the aesthetics of the pleasure districts, though this specific volume demonstrates his ability to render classical themes and natural subjects with precision.
The composition is presented across two pages, typical of the format found in Japanese illustrated books of the nineteenth century. On the left, a crane stands near the shoreline, positioned beneath the boughs of a pine tree. The right page depicts two figures, likely representing the legendary couple from the Noh play 'Takasago', seated near the water. The sea is rendered with repetitive, rhythmic lines that suggest movement, while the sky is marked by subtle horizontal bands of colour. The pine tree serves as a framing device, connecting the two scenes visually.
Eisen employs a restrained palette, relying on the natural tone of the paper and soft, muted washes of colour.
