A study of the allegorical figure Prontezza by Genoese artist Lazzaro Tavarone, rendered in black and white chalk on prepared paper.
This study by Lazzaro Tavarone depicts the allegorical figure of Prontezza, or speed and agility. Tavarone, a Genoese painter active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, was a student of Luca Cambiaso. His draughtsmanship reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, utilising a combination of black chalk and white heightening on a tinted paper ground to achieve volume and form.
The figure is seated, captured in a moment of poised movement. The drapery folds are rendered with confident, rhythmic strokes, typical of the Genoese school. The artist focuses on the gesture of the hand and the tilt of the head, suggesting the alertness associated with the concept of agility. The use of white chalk to catch the light on the fabric and facial features provides a sense of three-dimensional presence against the mid-tone paper.
Such drawings were often preparatory for larger decorative schemes, including frescoes for which Tavarone was well known in Genoa. The inscription at the top and bottom of the sheet identifies the subject, a common practice for studio drawings intended to be kept for reference or as part of a collection. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre of the frame, allowing the viewer to observe the technical application of chalk and the fluidity of the artist's line. This work offers a clear view into the working methods of a late Mannerist artist, demonstrating the transition from initial sketch to finished allegorical representation.
