A refined chalk study by the Italian Baroque master Sebastiano Conca, depicting a scene from the biblical story of Eliezer and Rebecca.
This drawing by Sebastiano Conca captures a moment from the biblical narrative of Eliezer and Rebecca. Conca, a prominent figure in the Roman Baroque tradition, demonstrates his command of anatomical form and light through the use of chalk. The composition focuses on the seated figure of Eliezer, who is depicted in a relaxed, reclining posture. His form is rendered with fluid lines that define the musculature and the folds of his drapery, typical of the academic training prevalent in eighteenth-century Italy.
Behind the central figure, the inclusion of an animal adds a sense of pastoral context to the scene. The artist employs subtle shading to create volume, allowing the figure to emerge from the neutral tone of the paper. Conca was known for his prolific output of preparatory sketches, which often served as the basis for larger, more complex religious commissions. His approach to drawing prioritised clarity and grace, balancing the dramatic tendencies of the Baroque period with a refined, classical sensibility.
This work provides insight into the working methods of a master painter. The visible strokes reveal the artist's process, from the initial contouring to the application of shadow. The paper itself retains a soft, aged quality, which complements the monochromatic palette of the chalk. By focusing on the human form in a narrative context, Conca creates a study that is both technically precise and expressive. The work remains a fine example of the draftsmanship that defined the Italian school during this period, offering a glimpse into the preparatory stages of larger decorative projects that adorned churches and palaces across Europe.
