A raw, expressive oil painting by Dutch CoBrA artist Karel Appel, featuring distorted figures and bold, primary colours.
Karel Appel was a founding member of the CoBrA movement, an avant-garde collective active between 1948 and 1951. This work, dated 1954, reflects the raw, spontaneous approach that defined his career. Appel rejected traditional aesthetic norms, preferring a style influenced by children's art, folk traditions, and the uninhibited expression of the subconscious. His technique involves thick, tactile applications of paint, often applied directly from the tube or with aggressive brushwork.
In this composition, the figures of people and birds are rendered through simplified, distorted forms. The imagery is not intended to represent reality in a literal sense. Instead, Appel focuses on the physical act of painting as a means of communication. The palette is dominated by primary colours, applied with a sense of urgency that creates a chaotic, energetic surface. The figures appear to merge with their environment, blurring the distinction between the subjects and the background. This approach is characteristic of the CoBrA philosophy, which sought to liberate art from the constraints of academic training and bourgeois expectations.
Appel often described his process as a struggle with the canvas, where the painting emerged from a state of near-trance. The resulting work possesses a primitive quality that remains direct and confrontational. By stripping away refined technique, Appel invites the viewer to engage with the work on a visceral level. The interplay of heavy black outlines and saturated patches of colour creates a sense of movement across the frame. This piece serves as a clear example of the artist's rejection of order in favour of emotional honesty and material presence.
