Constant Nieuwenhuys, known simply as Constant, was a founding member of the CoBrA movement. This group sought to break away from traditional aesthetic constraints, favouring a spontaneous, raw approach to image-making that drew inspiration from children's drawings and folk art. Le massacre reflects this period of his career, where the human form is reduced to gestural, almost frantic marks.

The composition is defined by a sense of urgency. Dark, calligraphic lines delineate figures that appear to collapse into one another, creating a scene of chaotic movement.
