To their left, a large, stylised pine tree provides a grounding element, its trunk and needles painted with a fluid, calligraphic hand. The figures themselves are depicted with minimal lines, yet their postures convey a sense of gentle familiarity and age.
Kōrin, a central figure in the development of the Rinpa aesthetic, often combined decorative sensibilities with a keen observation of human activity. Here, the use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two subjects.
