Yamaguchi Soken was a prominent painter of the Maruyama-Shijo school in Kyoto. This print originates from the 'Yamato jinbutsu gafu', a collection of woodblock-printed illustrations documenting the daily lives and customs of people in Japan during the Edo period. Soken is recognised for his ability to capture human figures with a sense of naturalism and gentle humour, moving away from the more rigid conventions of earlier schools.
The composition displays two distinct scenes presented side by side. On the left, figures are engaged in a seasonal activity, likely related to the New Year or spring festivities, with a child holding a battledore. The lines are clean and economical, characteristic of the woodblock medium, which relies on the precision of the carver to translate the artist's brushwork into ink. On the right, a group of adults in formal attire are depicted in a social gathering. The figures are rendered with minimal background detail, allowing the focus to remain entirely on their posture, clothing, and social interaction.
This work provides a window into the social fabric of the era. Soken avoids overly stylised or heroic depictions, preferring instead to record the quiet, observable reality of his contemporaries. The use of black ink on paper creates a stark, graphic quality that emphasises the silhouettes and patterns of the kimonos.
