A minimalist lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring gestural yellow forms set against a clean, expansive background.
New York III is a lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, produced in 1985. This work demonstrates the artist's engagement with the medium of printmaking, a practice she pursued alongside her painting career. Frankenthaler is associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, known for her soak-stain technique where thinned paint is applied to unprimed canvas. In this print, the composition is sparse, featuring isolated forms against a vast, neutral field. The visual language relies on the placement of colour and the texture of the marks rather than representational imagery.
The print consists of two distinct horizontal elements. The upper form is an elongated, gestural mark in shades of yellow and ochre, suggesting a sense of movement or a fleeting impression. Below this, a smaller, rectangular block of colour provides a counterpoint to the upper shape. The negative space surrounding these forms is essential to the composition, as it allows the marks to exist as independent entities within the frame. Frankenthaler often treated the printmaking process with the same spontaneity as her painting, allowing the physical properties of the ink and the paper to inform the final result.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between colour and space. By limiting the palette and the number of marks, Frankenthaler directs the viewer's attention to the specific quality of the pigment and the interaction between the printed surface and the paper. The lithographic process allows for subtle variations in tone and texture, which are visible in the application of the yellow ink. As a representative example of her later graphic work, New York III captures the economy of gesture that defined her approach to abstraction throughout her career.
