This woodblock print by Kawanabe Kyōsai, dated to 1872, captures a moment of intense drama. The central figure is a leopard, though the title refers to it as a tiger, reflecting the curiosity and occasional taxonomic confusion surrounding exotic animals imported to Japan during the Meiji period. The animal is depicted in a crouched, aggressive posture, having just caught a rooster. A second rooster watches from a perch above, adding a sense of narrative tension to the composition.
Kyōsai was known for his technical skill and his ability to blend traditional Japanese artistic conventions with the new influences arriving from the West. The print features a large cartouche containing Japanese text, which provides context for the animal's arrival and its perceived rarity. The use of colour is deliberate, with the spotted coat of the feline contrasting against the muted tones of the enclosure and the dark ground. The lines are precise, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the woodblock medium.
During the early Meiji era, the Japanese public was fascinated by foreign animals brought to the country for exhibition. Kyōsai, a prolific and often satirical artist, frequently documented these cultural shifts. This work functions as both a record of a specific event and an example of the artist's interest in natural history.
