Beschreibung
A 1972 colour lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring a soft, atmospheric pink form set against a pale yellow ground with delicate linear accents.
Nepenthe, created in 1972, is a colour lithograph that demonstrates Helen Frankenthaler's mastery of the soak-stain technique. This method involves thinning paint with turpentine to allow it to soak directly into the fibres of the support, creating translucent layers of colour that appear to float upon the surface. In this work, a large, amorphous cloud of soft pink dominates the centre, its edges bleeding into the surrounding pale yellow ground. The composition is sparse, relying on the interaction of these expansive colour fields rather than traditional representational forms.
Frankenthaler introduces subtle linear elements that provide a counterpoint to the fluid, atmospheric wash. A thin, horizontal yellow line anchors the lower edge of the pink form, while a delicate, darker stroke cuts across the upper portion of the colour field. At the very base of the print, a small, textured patch of deep green provides a final, grounding contrast. These marks are not merely decorative; they function as structural interventions that define the spatial relationships within the print.
As a practitioner of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, Frankenthaler moved away from the gestural intensity of her predecessors. Her work prioritises the physical properties of the medium and the optical experience of colour. Nepenthe reflects this approach, offering a quiet, contemplative visual field. The title itself, referencing a mythical potion used to banish grief or trouble, suggests an intent to create an environment of calm and clarity. The print is a clear example of how Frankenthaler utilised printmaking to explore the same concerns as her paintings, translating the fluidity of her canvas work into the precise, layered processes of lithography.
