A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI with the artist's signature expressive, non-idealised style.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI in the role of Arakawa Taro Takesada. Produced in 1794, this work belongs to a brief, intense period of activity for the artist, who appeared in the Edo art scene for only ten months. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to the yakusha-e (actor print) genre. Rather than idealising his subjects, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated facial features and expressions to capture the intensity of a performance.
The composition focuses on the actor's head and shoulders, set against a plain, mica-dusted background. The use of bold, dark lines defines the contours of the face, the dramatic kumadori makeup, and the elaborate hairstyle. The actor's gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of high tension within the play. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, soft reds, and the natural tone of the paper to create a balanced visual effect. The inclusion of the actor's crest in the upper right corner provides specific identification, a common practice in the marketing of kabuki actors during the Edo period.
Sharaku's work remains a subject of study for its departure from the standard aesthetic of his contemporaries. His ability to convey the psychological weight of a character through distorted proportions and sharp lines offers a distinct perspective on the theatrical culture of 18th-century Japan. This print is a representative example of his brief but active career, demonstrating his technical skill in woodblock printing and his unique vision of the kabuki stage.
