A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Riko in the role of Oiso no Tora.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Riko in the role of Oiso no Tora. The work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of actors within the theatrical traditions of Edo-period Japan. Shunjō, a member of the Katsukawa school, was known for his focus on individual likenesses rather than the generic, idealised features common in earlier ukiyo-e portraiture.
The composition presents the actor in a standing pose, captured in a moment of performance. The figure wears a layered kimono, with the outer garment featuring a distinct pattern of circular motifs against a wave-like background. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, relying on soft ochre, muted red, and charcoal tones to define the form and texture of the fabric. The background is simplified, consisting of horizontal bands that suggest an interior setting without distracting from the central figure. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the Katsukawa school's approach to capturing the specific facial expressions and postures of contemporary actors.
As a piece of ukiyo-e, this print functioned as a form of popular media, allowing theatre-goers to collect images of their favourite performers. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved woodblock. The subtle gradations and the balance between the decorative patterns of the kimono and the starkness of the actor's pose reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period. This print provides a view into the visual culture of the 18th-century Japanese theatre, documenting both the fashion of the time and the specific stylistic conventions employed by Shunjō to convey the personality of the actor on stage.
