A dynamic ink wash painting by Sesson Shūkei depicting a group of mynah birds confronting an owl, executed in the traditional Muromachi style.
This work by the Zen monk and painter Sesson Shūkei captures a moment of avian conflict. The composition centres on a solitary owl, surrounded by a group of mynah birds. The artist employs the traditional East Asian ink wash technique, known as suiboku-ga, to define the forms. The owl is rendered with soft, layered ink applications to suggest plumage, while the mynah birds are depicted with sharper, more aggressive brushwork. Their open beaks and varied postures convey a sense of movement and agitation.
Sesson Shūkei was an independent artist who worked outside the established painting academies of his time. His style is noted for its eccentricity and expressive power. In this piece, the contrast between the stillness of the owl and the frenetic energy of the surrounding birds demonstrates his ability to imbue natural subjects with psychological tension. The branches are suggested through minimal, gestural strokes, allowing the negative space of the paper to function as the atmosphere. This approach reflects the influence of Chan (Zen) aesthetics, where the economy of means is used to focus the viewer on the essence of the subject.
The work is a fine example of the bird-and-flower genre, which was popular among the literati and warrior classes of the Muromachi period. Rather than a purely decorative representation, Sesson uses the subject to explore themes of confrontation and hierarchy. The ink tones range from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes, creating a sense of depth despite the relatively flat composition. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the brushwork and the delicate balance between the figures and the empty space.
