Mark Rothko produced this work during a transitional period in his career, moving away from surrealist-influenced imagery toward the atmospheric, non-representational style for which he is known. The painting belongs to a series of works often referred to as Multiforms, characterised by floating, cloud-like shapes of colour that occupy the canvas without a clear horizon or central subject.

In this composition, Rothko employs a palette of soft yellows, muted greys, and sharp accents of orange and blue. The paint application is varied, with some areas appearing thin and translucent, allowing the underlying layers to show through, while other sections possess a denser, more opaque quality. The edges of the colour blocks are soft and blurred, creating a sense of suspension and movement within the frame. Unlike his later, more rigid rectangular compositions, this piece retains a degree of organic fluidity.

Rothko sought to create an experience that bypassed intellectual analysis, aiming instead for a direct emotional response from the viewer. By removing recognisable figures and objects, he forces the observer to engage with the physical properties of the paint and the interaction of the hues. The lack of a defined focal point encourages the eye to wander across the surface, absorbing the relationships between the warm and cool tones.
