A detailed mezzotint from the Liber Studiorum, depicting a rugged mountain mill in the Dauphiny region of France.
This print is a plate from the Liber Studiorum, a collection of landscape compositions initiated by J.M.W. Turner to demonstrate his range and skill in various sub-genres of the form. Henry Edward Dawe, a skilled engraver, executed this mezzotint after Turner's original drawing. The work depicts a rugged, mountainous scene in the Dauphiny region of France, capturing the dramatic topography surrounding the Grand Chartreuse monastery.
The composition employs a classic Romantic approach to nature, focusing on the tension between the small, man-made structure of the mill and the overwhelming scale of the surrounding rock formations and dense forest. The foreground is dominated by jagged boulders and a rushing stream, rendered with the tonal depth characteristic of the mezzotint process. Dawe uses the medium to create a range of shadows and highlights, which gives the scene a sense of atmospheric weight. The trees on the right provide a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal bridge and the steep valley walls, guiding the viewer's eye toward the centre of the image.
Turner's Liber Studiorum was intended as a teaching tool for artists and a showcase for the capabilities of printmaking. By collaborating with engravers like Dawe, Turner ensured that his vision of the sublime could be disseminated to a wider audience. This specific plate, marked with the letter 'M' at the top, indicates its classification within the series as a 'Mountainous' subject. The print reflects the period's fascination with the untamed wilderness and the aesthetic of the picturesque. It remains a fine example of early nineteenth-century British printmaking, where technical precision meets the dramatic sensibilities of the Romantic era.
